Possibly the greatest ever Landscape photographer, Ansel Adams is currently exhibiting in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich until 28th April. Ansel Adams has had a prolific career from 1925 to 1984. Starting his photography career at the early age of 16, armed with an inadequate Box Brownie, Adams started to produce stunning Landscapes inspired by the natural world, the reflective properties of water and the weather. Later moving to Large Format he produced some of the most iconic Landscapes of our time.
Whilst widely regarded as one of the 'greats' and having enormous expectations of his exhibition I was still not disappointed. His work epitomised the reason and benefit for seeing original work in person. Like listening to a band live rather than on CD, his work took on a new life that I had not seen online or in books. The clarity and depth in his f/64 stop exposures and the perfect tonal range is simply astonishing.
I challenge anyone to be unmoved and not contemplate packing it all in and choosing to wander the American wilderness armed with nothing but a Large Format camera in Adams' footsteps!
This exhibition, twinned with Greenwich, a beautiful riverside 'market town' within London is a day out that promises to be good!
